Description: take your chance to climb the highest volcano of Arequipa! Actually Coropuna is the third highest mountain of Peru afther Huascarán and
Yerupajá. Its glacier holds more ice than that of Huascarán. Coropuna has a total of 4 peaks, all of them higer than 6.000 metres. The first person who climbed it was Hiram Bingham, the man who discovered Macchu Picchu.
ITINERARY.
DAY 1.
Departure of Arequipa following the road that unites Arequipa and Cotahuasi (9 hours), towards the place named Pallarcocha, 270 km from Arequipa. Here we will install the first camp, close to the border of Pallarcocha lagoon at an altitude of 4.700 m.a.s.l.
Day 2.
The ascent begins, passing the sand circus (5.100 meters), in this place we can encamp. We continue with our trip and pass by a rotted glacier, crossing several cracks, climbing by the edge until 6.000 meters, where we install the camp.
Day 3.
We attack summit early in the morning; passing some cracks, we’ll return by the same way towards base camp. Afterwards we return Arequipa city immediately.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION.
Classification : Moderate, difficult
Minimum altitude : 4.800 m.a.s.l.
Maximum altitude : 6425 m.a.s.l.
The best time to climb in this region is between April and September, during the Andean summer. During the rest of the year, it is also possible to climb here, but it is more likely to have some bad weather. The rescue police see for the safety of all mountaineers in the region.
